Education is our future

At Safari we know that giving is more than donating, it is about making a difference! With this mindset Safari embarked on a journey in 2020 taking hands with Education is our Future (NPO 160407) who is involved in the upliftment of literacy in rural schools. Their mission is to encourage and improve education primarily in township and rural areas, with the goal of developing future leaders for the country. All learners should have a chance at learning.

INTERVENTION PROGRAMME

Umthombo Primary Mamelodi

The intervention programme was launched at Umthombo Primary in Mamelodi in 2020, and over the past few years, it has exceeded our expectations. A culture of “love for the reading word” was fostered at the school, and together we undertook a remarkable renovation of their library.

Safari Investments has also provided additional support at Umthombo Primary, including repairing leaking roofs and upgrading classrooms to create a more stimulating environment for learners. Regular visits from Mothusi and the Denlyn team brought joy and encouragement, adding many smiles to this inspiring project.

FUNDA NATHI

The Funda Nathi programme brings learning opportunities to our communities through educational tours, exhibitions, reading and public speaking campaigns, competitions, environmental awareness programmes, and by featuring learners on local radio. Since its launch in 2023, the programme has helped Safari build valuable relationships with schools, crèches, and NPOs, while also partnering with like-minded organisations such as the Siyakha Youth Foundation to expand our reach and impact.

NEW LIBRARY FOR JF KEKANA SECONDARY SCHOOL

Safari staff members joined in and supported “Education is our Future” to beautify the library at JF Kekana Secondary School. This room used to be a workspace for some of the teachers. Ryobi sponsored the paint and Safari arranged for the walls to be painted.

Safari staff members as well as Capital Live Radio station personnel jumped on board on Mandela Day 2023 to fix and paint the furniture and doors of the new library. Lunch were served to the teachers whereafter the CEO of Safari officially opened the new library. The book collection is often expanded by books now frequently donated by Education is our Future and staff members as well as the SPCA in Heidelberg. Safari also donated medals for this school’s Award Ceremony to motivate not only the achievers but also the other scholars.

TOWNSHIP ENTREPRENEURS ALLIANCE PARTNERSHIP

Our commitment to fostering entrepreneurship remained a central focus of our community empowerment initiatives. Through targeted partnerships, training programmes, and the creation of supportive platforms, we equipped both aspiring and established entrepreneurs with the tools and resources needed to grow their businesses. This included strategic collaborations with organisations such as the Township Entrepreneurial Alliance (TEA), the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), and Ladies in Business Network SA, along with continued support for impactful spaces like The Ark@1349 Entrepreneurial Hub and our new Puno Entle@1349 vegetable garden project.

From supplier development workshops and business support sessions to work readiness programmes and arts and culture initiatives, our efforts were designed to unlock opportunities, inspire innovation, and drive sustainable growth within township economies.

The Township Entrepreneurial Alliance (TEA) plays a key role in empowering township- based businesses through knowledge sharing, skills development, enterprise support, and market access. In 2024, Safari partnered with TEA founder Bulelani Balabala to host impactful events at Denlyn Shopping Centre in Mamelodi. At each event, five entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas to a live audience, with winners receiving business support packages valued at R50 000, sponsored by Nedbank. These events attracted more than 350 delegates each and created valuable networking opportunities. The speaker lineup featured experts in sales strategies, technology innovation, and Nedbank’s design- led initiatives. In addition, practical sessions introduced participants to e-commerce tools and simple digital solutions to help streamline and scale their businesses.

Safari hosted a vibrant networking session at Denlyn for a group of entrepreneurs from Mamelodi, together with the latest Denlyn Star finalists. The keynote speaker, Howard Zondo – a young author, public speaker, and “talent-preneur” known for his advocacy of black consciousness – inspired the audience with his story. Having grown up in Mamelodi, he embodies the belief that struggles, rather than pulling you down, can be transformed into symbols of hope. His message highlighted that hardship, instead of creating division, can unite people in their shared pursuit of better lives.

Professionals from Safari Investments also shared practical business advice with the entrepreneurs, covering topics such as motivation, branding, social media, and the legal aspects of running a business. A key outcome of the session was the establishment of a new entrepreneurial forum and WhatsApp support group for entrepreneurs in Mamelodi. Since its inception, the forum has successfully organised a Wedding Expo at Denlyn, providing local entrepreneurs with the opportunity to showcase their products and services.

Educational trips

Educational Trips are a great way to impart practical education skills and encourage learning outside the classroom. Children flourish by learning through experience, they develop cognitive skills and children interpret and predict the consequences of an action. At Denlyn Mall, we invited preschools in Mamelodi and Eersterust to join our educational tour program and to partner with Denlyn Mall to broaden the experiences of these children.

OTHER INITIATIVES

Impilo Tennis Club

Impilo Tennis Club approached Denlyn Mall for a sponsorship in February 2023, but as said, we don’t do donations but build relationships. On 25 February, the Denlyn Shaker Team in collaboration with Siyakha and the Tshwane Library grabbed the opportunity to create a love for the written word during a local tennis tournament in Mamelodi.

They played Scrabble and Word Ruffle with the younger kids whilst the older ones were practicing. Coach Ed Murray from Valhalla Tennis Club offers training to the kids and showed interest in the Funda Nathi Program.

Yet another unforgettable experience. The coaches from the Tennis Club in return assisted with our July holiday programme at Denlyn and we built the relationship by creating opportunities where they can market the Tennis Club at Denlyn.

Denlyn regularly supports the local tennis club by providing medals and water and often takes part in their Women’s Tournaments and Closing Ceremonies. In 2025, Denlyn also joined in celebrating the club’s 5th anniversary. Through this partnership, we strive to empower young people, inspiring them to dream big and continue striving to be the best they can be.

Capital Live

Safari partnered with a local based community radio stations Capital Live from Mamelodi. The station broadcasts rent free directly from Denlyn Mall. Capital Live serves a listener’s base of almost 600 000 listeners.

MPHO'S DREAM CENTRE

Safari supports Mpho’s Dream Centre in Mamelodi where children with autism, cerebral paresis, cerebral palsy and down syndrome are educated and encouraged to develop as a whole. We took hands with Reno Race (SABC 1) to renovate their class rooms and play area. On Mandela Day staff members of Safari as well as several tenants from Denlyn Shopping Centre painted class rooms while local contractors were paid to renovate their facilities. Capital FM broadcasted the event while big hearted community members from Mamelodi helped with the renovations, painting, and cleaning.

Received assistance from Reno Race SABC 1

The first episode was broadcasted on the 9th of October 2019 on SABC1.

OM PAGEANT COACHING

Oratilwe Mashigo, founder of Sandpaper Victors NPC, (Miss Teen SA 1st princess 2019, Miss Global Beauty 2019 Miss Congeniality) and former UNISA Radio presenter, started a beauty pageant for young girls at Denlyn Mall. She uses the venue on Sunday afternoons to teach self confidence and the ins and outs of beauty pageants. We grant her the opportunity to establish her enterprise and add value to the Mamelodi community.

UNIFORMS AND SHOES
